Propane Safety Training

  Overview

.

The Propane Training Institute (PTI) is the training division of the Propane Gas Association of Canada and is dedicated to offering state of the art training programs to assist the LP-gas industry to meet its and its customer LP-gas technical training needs.

Our Courses

Our courses have been designed to provide basic instruction on the safe handling of propane and propane powered equipment and satisfy Federal and Provincial training requirements. Most of our courses have been designed to be delivered in one day or less and some of our courses are also available with self-study materials to reduce the amount of in-class time for the student.

Government Regulations

The national Propane Storage and Handling Code for Canada (B149.2) stipulates that individuals who transfer propane from one container to another, must be the holder of a certificate recognized by the authority having jurisdiction. In addition, Occupational Health and Safety regulations require individuals to be adequately trained to perform their job functions. PTI courses are recognized by regulatory authorities across Canada.

The Propane Training Institute Training System

There are two components to the PTI training system

The Learning Process

Students will learn general information about propane as well as specific information relating to their job requirements. While the examination process is the same for all PTI students, students may learn the materials by one of two methods.

Classroom Instruction

All PTI courses may be delivered in a traditional classroom setting by a certified PTI Trainer. The trainer will guide the students through materials in the student workbook using various learning techniques and visual aids such as videos and power point presentations. Once the student has taken the classroom instruction, they are then prepared to complete the examination.

Self-Study Materials

Some PTI courses also have self-study materials. In those cases, the student is provided with the student manual and a video. The student then studies the material at their own pase and can contact the Trainer or Examiner with specific questions. When the student is ready, they move directly to the examination proess, which will ensue the students have learned the material.

The Examination Process

The examination process ensures that students can demonstrate their knowledge of course objectives. The examination process consists of three components.

Demonstration

Students are given a hands on demonstration of the functions covered in the course. For example, in a course that covers filling cylinders, the student will see a demonstration of how  that function is performed.

Written Exam

Students must successfully complete a written exam covering the learning objectives of the course. Students must obtain a mark of at least 75% in order to pass the written exam.

Practical Exam

Students must successfully complete a hands on practical exam. The practical exam ensures that the student can actually perform the functions covered in the course. As an example, students taking a course on filling cylinders will actually fill a cylinder in the practical exam. Students must achieve a grade of at least 75% in order to pass the practical exam.
